WHAT IS A MINIATURE WORK OF FINE ART?

Miniature paintings and sculptures are fine art on a small scale, with minute attention to detail, which can withstand close inspection or enlargement. As a guideline (not a rule), for a general definition of small scale, a subject should be no larger than 1/6th actual size. A human head is about 9 inches so the painted head should be no larger than 1½ inch. Subjects too small for portrayal in 1/6th scale or non-representational work such as abstracts or surrealism may meet the spirit of a miniature if the work meets the above definition of miniature art in fine detail.

WHAT TYPE OF WORK MAY I ENTER IN THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION?

Artwork that is original, in any medium listed on the annual prospectus, in any style, may be submitted if it is created with miniature techniques, meets the general definition of miniature fine art, and is within the size limits specified in the prospectus.

GOUACHE IS NOT LISTED AS A MEDIA CHOICE ON THE ANNUAL EXHIBITION PROSPECTUS.
CAN I STILL ENTER AN ARTWORK CREATED WITH GOUACHE?

Yes, you can. Gouache and egg tempera are both opaque and water-based media. You may enter them in the media group Opaque Watercolor. On your printed entry form, you should add a written note that the artwork was created with gouache or egg tempera.

WHY ARE PASTEL AND DRAWING LISTED TOGETHER AS A SINGLE MEDIA CHOICE
ON THE EXHIBITON ENTRY FORM?

The number of awards chosen for each media or subject category is based upon the total number of entries in each. There is a lower limit for any group. If there are too few entries in a group, no awards will be given for that media or category. By combining these two media, we are able to increase the number of awards that will be given.

There are many specific techniques that are included in Drawing. If you are submitting drawings, specify your technique on the entry form in the data field for Substrate, Specific Drawing Technique, or Material for Sculpture. This will allow us to include your technique in the Exhibiting Artists section of the exhibition catalog.

WHAT ARTWORK WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE?

  • Art created by any electronic method such as computer-generated art is unacceptable. All of your entries should be original in design and created by you.
  • Art that is created from another individual’s copyrighted material is not accepted.
  • Entries that are potentially offensive or controversial morally, politically or sexually will not be exhibited.
  • All work is subjected to selection by a jury panel for final decision of acceptance.

HOW MANY AWARDS WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE ENTRIES?

Each year the number of monetary awards given varies between 50 and 65. These consist of special awards funded both by the society and generous patrons. In addition to the special awards, there are awards given at several levels for entries in the media and subject categories depending upon the number of entries in each. A large group of entries in Animals may be allocated awards for First, Second, Third, and two Honorable Mentions. Whereas a small group of entries, such as in Calligraphy may be allocated only an award for First.

HOW AND WHEN WILL I KNOW IF MY ARTWORK ENTRIES HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED FOR THE EXHIBITION?

After the deadline specified on the Prospectus for entries, a list of all accepted works will be posted on the MASF website. This should occur one week after the jurors have reviewed all of the entries.

On the posted listing, each artist will be listed with his or her artwork entries that have been accepted for exhibition. For instance, if you sent MASF six artworks, and only five were accepted, you will see only those five accepted works listed with your name.

You will be responsible for checking the titles to ensure that they are what you titled your works and that the spelling is as you intended.

Tips for Filling Out, Printing & Successfully Submitting Entry Forms/Troubleshooting

  • Mandatory and highly encouraged fields on the Entry Form.

  • For ALL artists, step by step instructions with screen shots as iillustrations.

  • If the PRINT button appears not to work, scroll up to see if there is an error or warning message. For instance, if you did not enter an e-mail address, the warning message will display when you click the PRINT or SUBMIT button. You would have to scroll up to that area on the form to see the message. You can then click "Skip" if it is a warning message, but you must fix it if it is an error, such as a required field. Then PRINT the form.

  • Some computers will drop the artwork Price column off the right hand side of the printed output. If this happens, change the scale on the Print Dialog Menu (see example) to 95 or 94%. The price should then fit on the page.

  • If you do not have a printer available for the computer you are using, you can "print" to a PDF file, give it a name that you will remember and save it to a folder that you can access (it will most likely default to your Downloads folder). Then you can send the PDF file to a friend who has a printer. See examples of a Windows and Mac Print Dialog Menu.

  • After clicking the SUBMIT button, you should get the following message:
Your Entry form is on its way to MASF.
To return to the form, click or tap here.
If you do not receive this message*, contact admin@miniatureartsocietyofflorida.com, and we will assist you with submitting your form.

*A recently discovered user error: If you checked the box for "alternate shipping address" by mistake, before you uncheck it, make sure you have not entered a name in the "Name" field. Delete that please before you uncheck the box.

  • The Prospectus states that a Windows XP or higher or a Mac OS 10 or higher are required to print and submit the Entry Form. However other systems such as Chromebook with Chrome OS will work fine.

  • Don't have a computer and are using a friend's computer to view this? Contact admin@miniatureartsocietyofflorida.com, and we will assist you with printing and submitting your form.

For artists wishing to submit their own photographs for the Online Exhibition

For the Online MASF Show, electronic photographs of each work are required. MASF will do the photography, but if some artists are willing and able to provide photos of sculptures or framed works or scans of works prior to framing them under glass, or if the artwork itself has a high gloss finish, artists' photos will be welcomed by the MASF webmaster.

  1. The image file must be in JPEG format.

  2. Crop the image close to the frame or sculpture. The image height in pixels should be at least 300 times the actual height in inches. IE. If the framed height is 4 inches, the image height should be at least 1200 pixels.

  3. Save the image with the following name format in lower case letters: Your last name, space, your first name, space, (optional middle initial or name, space), a single digit for the work sequence on the entry form, space, and the first letter of no more than 4 words in the work title.

For example, for Gordon La Salle’s third work in a series of 5 entitled In The Still Of The Night, the photo file name would be:
    la salle gordon 3 itso.jpg

  4. Attach each image file to a separate e-mail message with the image file name in the Subject area, and e-mail them to admin@miniatureartsocietyofflorida.com.
